The Quest 2 is the first VR headset I’ve tried that doesn’t leave goggle marks on my face after an hour or so, remaining comfortable, if a little sweaty, after a solid two-hour play session. Oculus recommends a 2m squared space in which to play for standing “roomscale” experiences, but the largest space I have to play in is just 1.4 metres by 2.5 and it works fine with a bit of care and awareness of my surroundings. Move your head or arms near the edge of the zone and a virtual wall appears marking out the extent of your play area so you don’t bash something in the real world while you’re trying to do something in the virtual space. You choose whether to play standing up or seated, and then set up virtual safety zone called the “Guardian”. The headset and controllers turn on when you put them on. Setting up the Quest 2 is fairly simple, but you need to use the Oculus app on an Android or iPhone to do so and it requires that you log into your Oculus account using a Facebook account, a controversial change introduced in the last month.Ĭonnect the headset to your wifi, pair it with the app and you’re ready to go. That's why it's still my top VR pick right now, and with Apple's multi-thousand-dollar device arriving next year, it only makes Meta's Quest pricing seem more reasonable for a superior VR experience.Four cameras on the outside of the headset track your surroundings and your hands, with or without controllers, so no external sensors are required. As an entry ticket to experiencing VR, the Quest 2 is about as reasonable as you'll find. Plus, the Quest 2 shares the same app library as the Quest 3. And there are also plenty of strictly PC-connected VR headsets if you're looking mainly for PC VR.įacebook likely won't support the Quest 2 forever, but it still seems committed to supporting it for a while (along with a new subscription gaming service). The PSVR 2, which requires a PlayStation 5, runs a variety of more advanced games and also has added eye tracking and force-feedback game controllers. The latter will work as a standalone headset but will also double as a PC-connected one for PC VR gaming. The best possibilities are Sony's PSVR 2 and the upcoming Meta Quest 3. If spending more isn't an issue, there are other great options. Meta Do you want to spend $500?
